Heikki Koistinen appointed as Professor of Internal medicine
Docent Heikki Koistinen, MD, DMedSci, from the University of Helsinki and Minerva Foundation Institute for Medical Research, has been appointed Professor of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki. The language of instruction is Swedish.
As Professor of Internal Medicine, language of instruction Swedish, Heikki Koistinen is responsible for training in internal medicine in Swedish at the national level. The tasks of the University of Helsinki also include responsibilities for basic, postgraduate and continuing education in internal medicine. Koistinen is also responsible for the training of medical specialists in internal medicine.
Koistinens research is focused on regulation of metabolism. At present, his particular interests are in the mechanisms of insulin resistance in the skeletal muscle and in the factors affecting the gene expression of muscle and adipose tissue. Koistinen also studies the genetic and molecular background of type 2 diabetes, the mechanisms of gestational diabetes mellitus and the genetic mechanisms for regulating bone and mineral metabolism.
