Tutkimme my\u00f6s, miten muutokset t\u00e4ss\u00e4 tasapainossa johtavat ihmisten sairauksiin ja miten t\u00e4llaisia sairauksia voitaisiin havaita ja hoitaa nykyist\u00e4 paremmin. <\/p>\n<p>Kolesteroli on olennainen osa nis\u00e4kk\u00e4iden solukalvoja, joissa se m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 kaksoiskerroksen t\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 biofyysisi\u00e4 ominaisuuksia sek\u00e4 osallistuu rasvojen eli lipidien ja proteiinien vuorovaikutukseen. Ryhm\u00e4mme tavoitteena on ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4\u00e4, miten kolesterolia kuljetetaan ihmissolujen eri soluelinten v\u00e4lill\u00e4 sek\u00e4 miten muut lipidit ja lipidien kanssa toimivat proteiinit vaikuttavat t\u00e4h\u00e4n prosessiin. Tutkimme, miten ylim\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 kolesterolia varastoidaan solujen rasvapisaroihin ja miten sit\u00e4 mobilisoidaan kolesterolikuorman v\u00e4hent\u00e4miseksi ja kalvojen kolesterolipitoisuuden yll\u00e4pit\u00e4miseksi. Lipidipisaroihin varastoituu tyypillisesti sek\u00e4 kolesteryyliestereit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 triasyyliglyseroleja. Sit\u00e4, miten n\u00e4iden varastolipidien yhteen ker\u00e4\u00e4minen ja yhteinen metabolinen s\u00e4\u00e4tely tapahtuu, ei ymm\u00e4rret\u00e4 kunnolla.    <\/p>\n<p>N\u00e4m\u00e4 perusprosessit ovat olennaisen t\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 solujen normaaleille toiminnoille. Niiden h\u00e4iri\u00f6t puolestaan ovat yhteydess\u00e4 merkitt\u00e4viin terveysuhkiin, kuten syd\u00e4n- ja verisuonitauteihin sek\u00e4 lihavuuden aiheuttamiin aineenvaihdunnallisiin komplikaatioihin. Tutkimme esimerkiksi aineenvaihdunnalliseen rasvamaksasairauteen liittyv\u00e4n maksan lipidien liiallisen varastoitumisen mekanismeja sek\u00e4 periaatteita, jotka ovat ihmisten lipodystrofiaoireyhtymiss\u00e4 esiintyvien rasvan varastoimish\u00e4iri\u00f6iden taustalla. <\/p>\n<p>L\u00e4hestymme n\u00e4it\u00e4 kysymyksi\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 monipuolisesti solu- ja molekyylibiologisia, biokemiallisia ja biofysikaalisia l\u00e4hestymistapoja sek\u00e4 kuvantamismenetelmi\u00e4. K\u00e4yt\u00e4mme tutkimuksessa sek\u00e4 hyvin luonnehdittuja solulinjoja ett\u00e4 primaarisia ihmisen solu- ja kudosmateriaaleja. Kehit\u00e4mme ja k\u00e4yt\u00e4mme my\u00f6s uusia kuvantamistekniikoita lipidien havaitsemiseen sek\u00e4 geenitekniikan v\u00e4lineit\u00e4, joilla voimme vaikuttaa lipidej\u00e4
