Erityishuomion kohteena ovat olleet dendriittien okaset (engl. spines). Okaset ovat hermosolujen tuojahaarakkeista, dendriiteist\u00e4 kasvavia pieni\u00e4 ulokkeita, joissa synapsien kiihdytt\u00e4v\u00e4t reseptorit sijaitsevat. Uusia okasia syntyy uusien kokemusten tai uusien taitojen hankkimisen aikana, ja n\u00e4m\u00e4 syntyneet okaset muodostavat perustan opitun s\u00e4ilymiselle. Siksi h\u00e4iri\u00f6t dendriittien okasten s\u00e4\u00e4telyss\u00e4 ovat osallisina monissa neurologisissa sairauksissa muistih\u00e4iri\u00f6ist\u00e4 psykiatrisiin sairauksiin. Tavoitteemme on ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4\u00e4 kokonaisvaltaisesti, miten dendriittien okasten syntymist\u00e4 s\u00e4\u00e4dell\u00e4\u00e4n hermosoluissa.<\/p>\n<p>Toinen keskeinen tutkimuskohde on perifeerisen tulehduksen vaikutukset oppimiseen ja muistiin. Vaikka akuutin tai kroonisen tulehduksen v\u00e4litt\u00f6m\u00e4t vaikutukset aivoihin tunnetaan suhteellisen hyvin, on ep\u00e4selv\u00e4\u00e4, aiheuttaako tulehdus pidempiaikaisia muutoksia aivoihin. Tutkimus selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 perifeerisen tulehduksen pitk\u00e4aikaisia vaikutuksia kognitiivisiin prosesseihin ja tunnistaa solut, jotka osallistuvat n\u00e4ihin muutoksiin.<\/p>\n<p>Tutkimuksessaan ryhm\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 reumaattisen niveltulehduksen hiirimallia (CAIA).
